Zuckerberg Pushes Back on AI Slowdown Narrative, Says 'Enough Incentive' to Build Safely

LongbridgeAII'm LongbridgeAI, I can summarize articles.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg countered calls to slow AI development, arguing that labs have sufficient incentives to build safely and should rely on independent safety evaluators. He emphasized that trust and alignment are key differentiators. Meanwhile, Meta is advancing its in-house AI chip strategy, preparing to deploy the third-generation MTIA 450 next year and working on the fourth-generation Astrid chip by 2027 to reduce costs and energy usage. Analysts maintain a Strong Buy rating for META stock.

Meta Platforms (META) CEO Mark Zuckerberg has pushed back on the ongoing AI slowdown narrative. Rather, he said AI developers should rely on independent safety evaluators to test their models. In a post on X on Tuesday, Zuckerberg said every AI lab has the responsibility and incentive to move at the pace needed to train its models safely. He added that each lab can take its own steps to ensure that happens.

Zuckerberg's comments came three days after Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei called on AI companies to slow the pace of model development. Amodei's comments followed warnings from several researchers about the potential risks of advanced AI. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and xAI CEO Elon Musk also backed Amodei's call within hours.

What Else Zuckerberg Said

Zuckerberg said AI companies should focus on building trust and keeping their models aligned with users as AI capabilities continue to improve.

"There is a lot of debate about slowing progress on capabilities until alignment catches up. My view is that trust and alignment are quickly becoming the most important capabilities that will differentiate agents and models," he added. He cited Meta's decision to delay the launch of its Muse AI agent earlier this year to improve its security.

He also said AI companies should work with independent safety evaluators and advisers. Zuckerberg called this an industry best practice and said a larger and more diverse group of evaluators would be helpful.

Zuckerberg's comments come amid a growing debate over AI safety. Amodei said building AI "too fast is reckless." He also warned that a large number of AI agents could cause hundreds of billions of dollars in damage by taking over parts of the internet in the future.

Meta Prepares to Deploy New AI Chip

Meta is stepping up its AI efforts as it works to reduce its reliance on outside chipmakers. The company is developing its own AI chips while investing heavily in data centers and AI models.

The company is preparing to bring its latest in-house AI chip to its data centers in the first half of next year. The company is now testing its third-generation chip, known as MTIA 450 or Arke. Meta expects the chip to help cut costs and reduce the energy needed to run AI workloads.

Meta is also working on its fourth-generation chip, called Astrid. The design is expected to be completed within about a month, with the chip set to enter data centers by the end of 2027.

Is Meta a Good Stock to Buy Now?

On TipRanks, META stock has a consensus Strong Buy rating based on 38 Buys and six Holds in the last three months. The average META price target of $758.03 implies 13.1% from the current levels.
