AMD (AMD, Financials) is spending $8.2 billion on World Labs in a push to close one of the biggest gaps between itself and Nvidia.
The all-stock deal brings World Labs founder Fei-Fei Li and roughly 70 employees to AMD, giving the chipmaker a team focused on spatial intelligence and physical AI.
Citi analyst Atif Malik said the acquisition could help AMD build better end-to-end systems while giving it more insight into how advanced AI models are evolving. He maintained a Buy rating and $575 price target.
RBC's Srini Pajjuri said World Labs could help AMD build full-stack products for robotics, simulation and physical AI. But he cautioned that Nvidia still has a "significant" lead through its Omniverse platform. He has a $540 target and Sector Perform rating.
Wells Fargo's Joe Quatrochi also sees the acquisition expanding AMD's AI ecosystem, drawing comparisons with Nvidia's Omniverse, Cosmos and Isaac platforms. He has an Overweight rating and $700 target.
AMD shares rose about 1.4% in premarket trading Tuesday.
For AMD, the deal is about more than adding another AI company. It gives the chipmaker technology and talent that could help it compete with Nvidia beyond the hardware itself.
