Amazon Turns To Former Employees, Including Those Laid-Off, For AI, Cloud Jobs Amid ‘Boomerang’ Hiring Push: Report

Amazon is actively rehiring former employees, including those laid off, for AI and cloud roles through its 'boomerang hiring' strategy. This initiative offers faster hiring paths and reconsidered return-to-office policies to attract talent back to AWS and AI sectors. The push follows significant workforce reductions earlier this year, where Amazon cut approximately 30,000 corporate jobs to streamline operations. Despite recent layoffs, the company reports that boomerang hires now account for 3.4% of new U.S. hires.

Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) is reportedly reaching out to its former employees, including those who were previously laid off, to fill vacant roles in its cloud-computing and AI sectors.

Amazon’s AI agent organization, spearheaded by AWS VP Swami Sivasubramanian, has launched the “Swami’s Boomerang Reengagement Initiative”. The initiative aims to rehire former employees specializing in AI and machine learning, The Business Insider reported on Wednesday.

In another instance, an AWS Finance recruiter reached out to a former employee, offering a shortened path to a new job offer and asking whether Amazon’s return-to-office policy had contributed to their departure. The recruiter highlighted the company’s new opportunities in AI and machine learning as a reason to consider returning.

The company is offering a quicker route back to some former employees and is also reconsidering its return-to-office policy to see if it was a deterrent for some, the report stated.

Amazon spokesperson Haley Silva told the publication that this “boomerang hiring” is a regular practice across the company and is not a new initiative exclusive to AI or cloud computing.

A previous Business Insider report, citing Revelio Labs, found that 3.4% of U.S. new hires were "boomerang" employees at the end of 2025, up from 3.1% two years earlier.

Amazon did not immediately respond to Benzinga’s request for comments.

Amazon’s Layoffs Precede Rehiring Push

Earlier this year, Amazon announced approximately 16,000 job cuts across the company as part of an organizational restructuring. The company offered most U.S.-based employees 90 days to seek internal positions, and employees who do not secure new roles will receive severance pay, outplacement assistance and health insurance benefits.

In March, Amazon reportedly eliminated at least 100 white-collar jobs in its robotics division. The e-commerce giant has eliminated roughly 30,000 corporate jobs so far as part of a broader effort to streamline operations and improve efficiency through AI-powered tools. The cuts include about 14,000 layoffs in October 2025 alongside the January workforce cuts, representing nearly 10% of the company’s corporate workforce.

Earlier this month, Hilary Maxson, the CFO of Oracle Corp. (NYSE:ORCL), which has laid off over 21,000 employees, told employees that the company is not focused on "doing more with less" following layoffs. Instead, she emphasized disciplined spending and simplifying processes that do not add value for customers.

Price Action: Year-to-date, AMZN stock has climbed 12.57%, as per Benzinga Pro. On Tuesday, it fell 1.34% to close at $254.98.
