Meta Pauses Muse AI Sharing After Researchers Say 6,800 Chats Were Exposed ‘Like a Table Of Contents’

Meta suspended its Muse AI chat-sharing feature after security researchers discovered that predictable URL formats exposed approximately 6,800 public links containing sensitive personal and business data. The company paused the functionality to review the vulnerability and enhance link discoverability controls. This privacy incident occurs ahead of Meta's Q3 earnings report, with analysts projecting strong revenue growth driven by AI monetization strategies.

On Tuesday, Meta Platforms, Inc. (NASDAQ:META) said it has suspended the Muse AI conversation-sharing feature after security researchers found that public domain name system (DNS) records could expose thousands of shared chat links.

Researchers Uncover 6,800 Muse AI Chat Links

Over the weekend, security researchers at Claroc found that Muse generated sharing URLs using a predictable format, incorporating conversation titles into web addresses under a common domain structure.

According to Claroc, this made the links discoverable through passive DNS searches, which use archived records of domain name system activity to identify internet addresses.

"Muse names each share’s web address after the conversation’s own title, and that address is written into public DNS," Claroc said in a blog post. "One passive-DNS search brings back thousands of them, listed by name, like a table of contents."

Claroc said it identified approximately 6,800 shared Muse chat links and accessed conversations containing sensitive information.

The material included meeting details involving a leading AI lab, a small-business loan application, a bank fraud alert with partial account information, a company’s vacation calendar and internal business documents.

Ars Technica first reported on Claroc’s findings.

In a statement emailed to Benzinga on Tuesday, a Meta spokesperson said the company launched the Muse bug bounty program to let researchers identify potential issues and help improve the product, adding that shared Muse content generates a webpage accessible to anyone with the link.

“However, we’ve paused this functionality while we review this report and consider changes to how these links can be discovered,” the Meta spokesperson stated.

Claroc subsequently reported that researchers could no longer open a sample of links they had previously accessed following Meta’s update. "We are glad to see it closed this quickly," the update read.

Meta’s Muse AI Faces Privacy Concerns Ahead of Earnings

In September, technology columnist Jason Aten of Inc. magazine alleged that Meta’s Muse accessed private messages on his Mac despite him never enabling the "Full Disk Access" permission.

At the time, Meta spokesperson Andy Stone rejected the allegation, saying Muse can access Apple Inc.’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) Messages app only when users explicitly opt in. This might also interest you.

Meta will report its third-quarter results after the market closes on Wednesday. Analysts expect revenue of $63.36 billion, up from $51.24 billion a year earlier. The company has beaten revenue estimates for more than 10 consecutive quarters.

Tech analyst Dan Ives expects Meta to monetize its 3.5 billion-user base through its Muse AI agent, which he says could make AI more accessible through Facebook and Instagram.

Truist, according to market strategist Shay Boloor, projects that Muse will generate approximately $29 billion in revenue by 2030, including an estimated $11 billion from subscriptions.

Price Action: On Tuesday, Meta shares closed at $694.25, down 1.59%. In after-hours trading, shares rose 0.11% to $695, according to Benzinga Pro.

According to Benzinga Edge Stock Rankings, META shows strong price trends across the short-, medium- and long-term horizons, along with a moderate value score.
