Crypto News | Bitcoin Holds $78K Through a Fed Hike and a Failed Bill — Oil Falls, BOJ Hikes, SEC Opens Tokenized Stock Trading

Bitcoin is down just 1.5% in September — its historically worst month — after absorbing a Fed hike to 3.75%-4.00%, a 49-50 CLARITY Act failure, oil at $106, and a BOJ rate hike to a 31-year high. The non-reaction is the story. Blockware's Mitchell Askew: "Anybody who was going to sell on events like these has already sold." Oil falling 5% below $96 and the 10-year retreating below 5% gave every major crypto a bid Friday — none of the 40 most liquid coins fell. The SEC approved a temporary innovation exemption for tokenized NMS stock trading two days after Congress failed to act. The BOJ hiked to 1.25% but the yen fell to 156.91 as two board members dissented and guidance stayed vague. Bitcoin's ceiling at $82,000 remains untested.Bitcoin Is Down 1.5% in Its Worst Month as Two Bad Headlines Fail to Move ItBitcoin is trading at $78,000 — down 1.5% in September despite the CLARITY Act failing 49-50, a 25bps Fed hike, WTI hitting $106, the DXY topping 100, and the BOJ raising to a 31-year high. The non-reaction is the data point. Blockware's Mitchell Askew: "A 25bp hike and the CLARITY Act failing would have sent price meaningfully lower in a different environment. Instead, we got basically nothing." Positioning explains part of it: BTC-denominated open contracts fell 13.5% between September 3-11 against a 5% price decline, leaving positioning 20% below pre-rally levels. Thin positioning means fewer forced sellers — but also fewer buyers, and exhausted sellers and absent buyers produce the same chart. Sygnum CIO Fabian Dori pushed back on the standard bearish rate framing: "If rising yields signal debasement and sovereign counterparty risk, that is actually a positive driver for store-of-value assets." Bitcoin has averaged a 77% Q4 gain historically. Glassnode data shows 8% of supply acquired between $80,000-$82,000 — the ceiling that hasn't been cleared since September 4.HYPE Jumps 11% as Every Liquid Coin Gains and Oil Falls Below $96Every one of the 40 most liquid coins gained Friday — the mirror image of Tuesday when 92 of the CoinDesk 100 fell. HYPE +11%, Zcash +8%, Solana +6%, BNB and Dogecoin +4%, Bitcoin +2%. WTI dropped 5%+ to below $96, and the 10-year retreated to 4.96% from 5.04% — those two moves explain more of the bid than anything in crypto. The dot plot did the rest: its median of one more hike in 2026 (50bps total) came in below BofA's 75bps and markets' 87.5bps pricing. Brooks was right — Warsh couldn't live up to what was priced, and the risk-on response treats the undershoot as relief. Crypto equities led the recovery: Coinbase and Robinhood each +5% Thursday, Bullish and Securitize +3-7% Friday after the SEC's tokenized securities exemption partially offset Tuesday's CLARITY failure. Warren Buffett stepped down from Berkshire Hathaway after 61 years — his son Howard, who has not stated a public position on crypto, takes over as chairman. The Zcash ETF Took $47 Million on a Day Ether Funds Lost Money for a Third SessionUS spot ether ETFs shed ~$39M Thursday — a third consecutive outflow session totaling ~$404M — while ether itself rose 2% to $2,470. Price up, flows out across three sessions describes two buyer bases moving in opposite directions: US institutional allocation reducing while spot buyers absorb. Meanwhile Grayscale's ZCSH pulled in $47M Thursday and more than $230M this month — over half its existing AUM in weeks — on a day Bitcoin ETFs took in $159M. Zcash gained 130% over 30 days; futures OI peaked at $2.4B before unwinding 20% to $1.4B, so a $230M spot bid represents a materially different composition from the leverage-driven move that carried ZEC past $1,000. Whether Zcash inflows hold alongside recovering ether inflows would indicate genuine additional demand rather than rotation.Bank of Japan Lifts Rates to 31-Year High as Two Board Members DissentThe BOJ raised its policy rate to 1.25% from 1% by a 7-2 vote — its first hike in three months and the highest rate since 1993. Board members Asada and Sato dissented, arguing for patience. Despite the hike, the yen fell to 156.91 per dollar as markets focused on the lack of hawkish guidance and the two dissenters. SMBC's Hirofumi Suzuki: "The two dissenting votes conveyed a dovish impression and tempered expectations for further hikes." The BOJ still lags the ECB at 2.5% and the Fed at 3.75%-4.00%, with analysts expecting 1.5% by end-March and 1.75% by Q2 2027. For crypto, the muted yen response reduces the immediate carry trade unwind risk — the mechanism that crashed Bitcoin from $65,000 to $50,000 in a week in 2024. Treasury Secretary Bessent had voiced support for decisive steps against yen weakness.SEC Approves Temporary Innovation Exemption for Tokenized NMS Stock TradingThe SEC approved a temporary, conditional Innovation Exemption allowing tokenized NMS stocks to trade in limited fashion on qualifying on-chain venues. Eligible tokenized securities trading venues may use automated market makers and liquidity pools, subject to public disclosure, trading transparency, coordinated circuit breakers, recordkeeping, and technical safeguards — with limits on stock symbols and volume. The SEC said it intends to observe how on-chain venues operate and generate data for future long-term rules. The move arrived 48 hours after the CLARITY Act failed, fulfilling Chairman Paul Atkins' commitment to act within existing statutory authority regardless of congressional outcome. The durability gap remains: rules made under existing authority can be unmade by the next administration, which is the problem legislation was meant to solve permanently.
