'Stop Dreaming,' Says Investor About Micron Stock

LongbridgeAII'm LongbridgeAI, I can summarize articles.

Investor Rational Techne maintains a 'Strong Sell' rating on Micron (MU), arguing that despite stellar Q4 earnings and guidance, the stock is at a cyclical peak. He cites risks from future supply expansion by 2027-2028, potential competition from Chinese producer CXMT, and reliance on hyperscaler AI spending. While retail confidence remains high, RT views this as a contra-indicator. This bearish view contrasts sharply with Wall Street's consensus of 'Strong Buy' and an average price target of $1,581.40.

Micron (NASDAQ:MU) appears to have developed something of an earnings hangover lately. The memory-chip giant keeps delivering huge numbers, yet recent enthusiasm has struggled to last very long. Following its June report, MU surged ~16% in the next session after crushing expectations. However, five trading days later, virtually that entire post-report gain had disappeared.

The latest quarter brought another example of investors losing enthusiasm soon after strong results arrived. Micron reported fiscal Q4 revenue of $54.23 billion, rising 379% year-over-year and topping Wall Street's $51.49 billion estimate, while adjusted EPS of $33.42 also came in ahead of expectations. Management then guided for $60 billion to $63 billion in fiscal Q1 revenue, exceeding the consensus forecast at the midpoint. Yet, MU gained only about 3% Thursday before giving back that gain over the following two sessions.

One investor who believes this post-earnings hesitation deserves closer consideration is Rational Techne (RT), who remains deeply bearish despite the company's stellar financial performance. His concern focuses partly on individual investors, whose confidence in MU appears largely intact despite the stock struggling to build on another strong quarterly report.

"In a bubble atmosphere, the behavior of retail investors, taken in aggregate, is usually a contra-indicator to the best course of action for long-term investors," RT argues.

From his perspective, such confidence could leave buyers vulnerable if expectations have moved too far ahead of sustainable results. Rather than assuming recent profitability represents a permanent shift, RT sees several forces capable of making future conditions far less favorable.

One concern involves additional memory supply expected to arrive during coming years. New manufacturing capacity should enter the market beginning during 2027 and continuing into 2028, while Chinese producer CXMT could create another source of global competition. RT also doubts whether long-term customer agreements would provide bulls with their expected protection during weaker industry conditions.

Demand presents another potential vulnerability within his bearish thesis on MU shares. RT argues that current AI infrastructure spending depends heavily upon hyperscalers committing vast amounts toward computing capacity. If returns disappoint, financing becomes harder to justify, or cheaper models require fewer resources, semiconductor spending farther down the chain could eventually suffer.

Those concerns bring RT back toward Micron's subdued reaction following another blockbuster quarterly performance. "The market sees that we are overwhelmingly likely to be at a cyclical peak for Micron," the investor noted.

Under that interpretation, excellent quarterly figures alone cannot justify paying the current valuation for MU shares. RT believes today's pricing already assumes favorable memory conditions will continue well into coming years, creating greater vulnerability whenever supply expands or AI spending slows. With the stock already recording a 273% gain during 2026, he sees an unfavorable balance between remaining upside and potential losses.

RT ultimately sees enough danger surrounding future conditions to maintain his bearish stance. He therefore assigns MU shares a Strong Sell rating. (To watch Rational Techne's track record, click here)

Wall Street clearly sees things very differently from RT. Micron earns a Strong Buy consensus from 26 analysts, with 25 recommending the stock and only one staying on the sidelines. The average 12-month price target of $1,581.40 points to about 49% upside from current levels. (See MU stock forecast)
