What's Going On With Oracle Stock Tuesday?

LongbridgeAII'm LongbridgeAI, I can summarize articles.

Oracle (ORCL) stock experienced volatility following OpenAI's cancellation of its GPT-6.1 Astra model, raising concerns about Oracle's heavy dependence on OpenAI for AI infrastructure revenue. Analysts highlight counterparty risk, noting that approximately half of Oracle's $600 billion in remaining performance obligations are tied to OpenAI. Additionally, Oracle invoked a force majeure clause for its Project Jupiter data center due to potential delays, underscoring execution risks in its AI buildout despite shares rising slightly in premarket trading.

Oracle Corp. (NYSE:ORCL) stock was volatile Tuesday after OpenAI canceled the planned release of its GPT-6.1 Astra artificial intelligence model.

The development matters for Oracle because the software giant has tied a significant part of its AI infrastructure growth to OpenAI.

Nasdaq futures rose 0.39%, while S&P 500 futures gained 0.21%.

OpenAI Cancels GPT-6.1 Astra Release

OpenAI determined that GPT-6.1 Astra did not meet its safety and alignment standards, CNBC reported Monday.

The decision came as OpenAI’s annual developer conference, OpenAI DevDay 2026, takes place Tuesday at Fort Mason in San Francisco.

Earlier this month, executives at rival Anthropic urged AI companies to slow the pace of model development. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman supported the proposal.

Saachi Jain, OpenAI’s head of safety systems, said the company maintains a high bar for safety and alignment before releasing models to users.

Why OpenAI Matters To Oracle

Oracle has invested heavily in AI infrastructure, making OpenAI an increasingly important part of its growth story.

Earlier this month, Paul Meeks, head of technology research at Freedom Capital Markets, said investor concerns were shifting from Oracle’s capital spending toward its dependence on OpenAI.

He described the issue as potential counterparty and customer-concentration risk.

Meeks said Oracle had more than $600 billion in remaining performance obligations, or RPO, and estimated that about half was tied to OpenAI.

That concentration means Oracle’s ability to convert its AI backlog into revenue has become closely linked to OpenAI’s execution.

That helps explain why setbacks at OpenAI can draw attention to Oracle. However, the cancellation of one model does not necessarily mean OpenAI will reduce its broader computing needs or infrastructure spending.

OpenAI did not immediately respond to Benzinga’s request for comment.

Oracle’s AI Buildout Faces Execution Risk

Oracle’s AI buildout is also facing execution risk. On Sept. 24, Oracle invoked a force majeure provision tied to Project Jupiter, a large New Mexico data center project.

The move sought protection from certain payments if the site is delayed beyond its planned 2028 launch. Oracle said the project remains on schedule and that it remains committed to the development.

Together, the Project Jupiter issue and OpenAI’s model cancellation highlight two risks investors are watching closely: whether Oracle can build AI capacity on schedule and whether its largest customers can generate enough demand to support that infrastructure.

ORCL Price Action: Oracle shares were up 0.26% at $132.94 during premarket trading on Tuesday, according to Benzinga Pro data.
