Anthropic Posts $80.7B Q1 Loss Ahead of IPO — But There's a Catch

LongbridgeAII'm LongbridgeAI, I can summarize articles.

Anthropic reported an $80.7B Q1 2026 net loss, primarily due to a $72B non-cash accounting charge from convertible bonds, while revenue surged to $16.3B. The company plans an IPO with a $1.5T-$2T valuation, despite significant spending commitments and AI safety concerns highlighted in its prospectus.

Anthropic's net loss widened to $80.7 billion in the first half of 2026, up from $13 billion a year earlier, according to its draft prospectus. However, the catch is that most of this loss did not involve cash leaving the company. Instead, it came from a $72 billion accounting charge, rather than its day-to-day operations.

The charge reflects an increase in the estimated value of bonds that could later convert into Anthropic shares. As Anthropic's valuation rises, so does the value of these bonds, forcing the company to record an accounting loss.

Anthropic's Revenue Growth

In the first half of 2026, Anthropic generated $16.3 billion in revenue, up from $1.1 billion a year earlier. For all of 2025, revenue totaled $4.6 billion.

At an October 14 meeting with prospective IPO investors, the company said its Q3 revenue rose 45% from the previous quarter to $16.8 billion. Still, some investors were disappointed as revenue growth slowed from the previous quarter, when it rose more than 139% from Q1 to Q2.

Anthropic's Spending Concerns

Anthropic spent nearly $9 billion on computing power and infrastructure in the first half of 2026, more than the $7.3 billion it spent throughout 2025.

The company's long-term spending costs could add further pressure. The company has committed to spending at least $518 billion over the next decade through multiple contracts with Google (GOOGL), Amazon (AMZN), Microsoft (MSFT), and Nscale.

The Wall Street Journal noted that Anthropic is currently negotiating additional computing-related contracts that could add up to $150 billion.

Anthropic Prepares for a Potential IPO

Anthropic is reportedly planning to go public as early as November, with a target valuation of $1.5 trillion to $2 trillion. However, concerns over AI safety have dampened some of the IPO excitement.

In September, Reuters reported, citing Anthropic's draft IPO prospectus, that the company warned advanced AI could pose "catastrophic or existential risks to humanity." Risk factors account for 80 of the prospectus' 261 pages, nearly twice the 48 pages devoted to its business. CEO Dario Amodei has also called on the AI industry to slow the release of new AI capabilities to address these risks.
