LongbridgeAII'm LongbridgeAI, I can summarize articles.

U.S. stock futures rose on Sept. 17 following a significant selloff triggered by the Federal Reserve's unanimous decision to raise interest rates by 25 basis points to 3.75%-4%. Fed Chair Kevin Warsh cited persistent inflation as the reason for tightening and signaled further hikes are likely before year-end, with dot plots indicating most officials expect additional increases by late 2026. Major indices like the Dow, S&P 500, and Nasdaq had closed lower on Sept. 16, but early trading indicated a rebound.

Equity markets are modestly higher on the evening of Sept. 16 following a big selloff that occurred after the U.S. Federal Reserve raised interest rates 25 basis points and signaled that another increase is likely before year's end. The blue-chip Dow Jones Industrial Average closed 631 points lower after Fed Chair Kevin Warsh said that inflation remains too high and further monetary policy tightening is needed.

The benchmark S&P 500 index fell 0.45% and the technology-laden Nasdaq ended the day down a slight 0.01% as markets and investors digested the central bank's outlook for the future direction of interest rates. In a unanimous decision, the Fed raised its trendsetting overnight Federal Funds Rate by a quarter of a percentage point, lifting it to a range of 3.75% and 4%.

It was the first interest rate hike from the American central bank since July 2023.

More Rate Hikes Ahead?

"The plain fact is that inflation is too high, and has been for too long," said Warsh during his press conference following the announcement of the interest rate decision. "This summer's inflation readings do not tell me that underlying trends have meaningfully improved." Bank stocks were particularly hard hit after the interest rate hike, with Bank of America (BAC) and Wells Fargo (WFC)
each dropping 3%.

The dot plot grid of Fed officials' expectations for interest rates moving forward showed that 16 of 18 participants expect another interest rate increase by the end of 2026, with four Fed officials seeing two more rate hikes as a possibility. The Federal Reserve is scheduled to make two more decisions on interest rates this year, on Oct. 28 and Dec. 9.

Following the late day selloff on Wall Street, futures markets are pointing to a higher open on Sept. 17. The Dow is up 0.12%, the S&P 500 is up 0.17%, and the Nasdaq Composite is rising 0.33%.
