STI Slips 0.24% to Close at 5,709.91 as OCBC Drag Offsets Broad Gains, City Developments Jumps on Review News

SGX Close Recap

LongbridgeAII'm LongbridgeAI, I can summarize articles.

Singapore stocks dipped 0.2% on Sep 23, with the STI closing at 5,709.91. Declines in OCBC and Seatrium outweighed gains from City Developments. Regional indices were mixed. The SGX noted institutional investors returned to large-caps like Yangzijiang Shipbuilding, Keppel, and Thai Beverage in Q3.

The Straits Times Index slipped 13.85 points, or 0.24%, to close at 5,709.91 on Wednesday, snapping a two-session winning streak even as advancers outpaced decliners 17 to 10, with three constituents unchanged. The index traded between an intraday high of 5,735.97 and a low of 5,682.58, and the pullback traced almost entirely to a handful of heavier-weighted decliners rather than any broad-based selling.

The session's softness centered on the banking sector. Jefferies on Tuesday assigned Buy ratings to DBS, with a $91 target, and UOB, with a $48 target, but rated OCBC only Hold with a $35 target, arguing the stock's share price already reflects a positive outlook built on wealth-management growth while UOB still has room to re-rate from a lower valuation. OCBC fell 1.52% to $31.65 on the back of that call, breaking a two-session run in which Singapore's three domestic banks had moved in lockstep; DBS eased 0.14% to $77.69 and UOB edged up 0.09% to $42.84, splitting the trio for the first time since Monday.

Session Movers

City Developments (C09.SG, +3.69%) led the board higher, climbing to $8.42 ahead of the September 28 release of its strategic review, conducted by advisory firm Teneo following a public boardroom dispute within the family of controlling shareholder Kwek Leng Beng; analysts expect the outcome to outline a lighter-capital business platform. UOB Kay Hian maintained a Buy rating Wednesday with an $11.85 target, and the developer's H1 net profit had earlier surged 230.7% to $301.6 million on stronger property and hotel performance. The stock trades at 0.776 times book, cheaper than 56.32% of the past year.

ST Engineering (S63.SG, +1.12%) advanced to $10.81 after signing a two-year exclusive agreement with Hebei Airlines to service CFM56-7B engines on its Boeing 737-800 fleet from Xiamen, alongside three multi-year agreements with Collins Aerospace spanning Boeing 787 fan-component maintenance, spare-parts procurement and A320/737 component support. Nvidia separately named ST Engineering among Singapore enterprises adopting agentic and physical AI as the country pushes sovereign AI deployment. The stock now trades at 58.29 times earnings, cheaper than just 9.66% of the past five years — among the priciest readings on the board.

OCBC (O39.SG, -1.52%) slipped to $31.65 on the Jefferies Hold call described above, with no other fresh company disclosure Wednesday. The stock trades at 2.25 times book, cheaper than only 0.08% of the past five years, and closed marginally above its $31.53 consensus target.

Seatrium (5E2.SG, -2.33%) fell to $2.10, giving back part of Tuesday's buyback-driven gain, even as the company delivered its seventh LNG carrier conversion into a floating storage and regasification unit for Karpowership — the last of an eight-year, seven-vessel program at its Admiralty Yard — and Lim & Tan Securities reiterated a Buy rating with a $2.50 target. Neither development stemmed the pullback.

One point worth noting

Wednesday showed how breadth and the index can pull in different directions: 17 of 30 constituents advanced against 10 decliners, yet the benchmark still slipped 0.24% as losses concentrated in a few heavier-weighted names, OCBC chief among them. The valuation contrast between the day's two poles was notable too — OCBC, the steepest large-cap decliner, trades at 2.25 times book, cheaper than just 0.08% of the past five years, while City Developments, the day's best performer, trades at a comparatively modest 0.776 times book, cheaper than 56% of the past year. Today's laggard was the board's priciest bank; today's leader was one of its cheaper property names.
