Novavax, Moderna cool as WHO downplays plague-related death in Russia

Novavax , Moderna , and other pandemic-era favorites traded flat in the premarket on Tuesday after the WHO said that Russian officials have traced all the people in contact with the plague research lab employee who died of pneumonia of an “unknown” cause last week.

"All of the patients' contacts have been reportedly been identified and are being monitored for illness, ‌and none to date have shown symptoms of illness," Reuters reported, quoting WHO spokesperson Christian Lindmeier.

Lindmeier said that Russian authorities are investigating whether pneumonic plague caused the female laboratory technician’s death. However, the Russian side has not yet officially responded to the WHO request for information, the spokesperson added.

Novavax closed 20% higher, and Moderna added 7% on Monday after Rospotrebnadzor, a Russian agency tasked with handling infectious diseases, reported the death of the 28-year-old worker at the Irkutsk Research Anti-Plague Institute of Siberia.

Other notable gainers included messenger RNA drug developer Arcturus Therapeutics and biodefense company Emergent BioSolutions , which, alongside Novavax and Moderna , were among clear favorites during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Trump: Becton Dickinson agrees to invest $3B in US manufacturing, including $1B+ in Nebraska

U.S. medical technology company Becton Dickinson agreed to invest $3B to bring the manufacturing of essential medical products to the United States, President Donald Trump said Monday in a post on Truth Social.

BD will invest more than $1B in Nebraska to ramp up production of numerous products, including needles made with American steel, Trump noted.

BD said it plans to invest $19 billion in the U.S. over several years across capital, operations, and supply-chain initiatives, including $3 billion to expand manufacturing at strategic sites nationwide. The company expects to increase domestic production of essential medical consumables by about 5 billion units annually, raising the share of such products supplied from within the U.S. to roughly 80%, according to a statement.
