Elon Musk Agrees Tesla's Early Custom AI Chit Bet May be More Important Than Ever, Backs TSLA Engineer's Warning: ‘Current Compute Shortage Is Only the Tip of the Iceberg’

Elon Musk endorsed a Tesla engineer's warning that the current AI compute shortage is merely the 'tip of the iceberg,' emphasizing the strategic importance of Tesla's custom inference chips. As demand for autonomy and robotics grows, Musk highlighted Tesla's roadmap for AI5 and AI6 chips and the $3 billion Terafab project to secure long-term supply, noting external vendors cannot meet future needs.

Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:TSLA) CEO Elon Musk agreed with a Tesla AI engineer’s argument that the automaker’s early decision to develop and deploy custom inference computers across its vehicle fleet could look "unprecedented" as demand for artificial-intelligence compute accelerates.

Musk Backs Engineer’s Compute Shortage Warning

"Yes," Musk wrote on X in response to Tesla engineer Yun-Ta Tsai, on Sunday, who said Tesla’s years of "iterating and scaling of its own inference computers for each car sold" could prove unusually important before the superintelligence era. Tsai added, "The current compute shortage is only the tip of the iceberg. When autonomy becomes indispensable, the real shortage will follow."

Tesla has spent years designing its own inference hardware to run neural networks inside vehicles rather than relying entirely on general-purpose processors. The company on its website says its approach to autonomy depends on advanced vision and planning AI supported by efficient inference hardware, with custom chips optimized for performance per watt and mass deployment in cars.

AI5 And AI6 Advance Tesla’s Chip Roadmap

That strategy is now advancing through AI5 and AI6. Tesla said in January that development of both custom inference chips had progressed, with production then planned for 2027 and 2028, respectively. Musk has separately said AI5 will "punch far above its weight" and is primarily optimized for edge computing in Robotaxi and Optimus.

Terafab Targets Long-Term Chip Supply Constraints

Tesla’s latest disclosures also show why Musk sees semiconductor supply as a strategic constraint. During the second-quarter earnings call, he said the company’s planned Terafab is necessary because Tesla otherwise "simply won’t have enough AI chips" to scale Optimus. The project is designed to accelerate iteration across logic, memory, packaging and chip testing.

Reuters reported in April that Tesla, SpaceX and xAI are pursuing Terafab partly because Musk expects outside suppliers cannot satisfy their long-term chip requirements. Tesla’s Austin development fab alone is expected to cost roughly $3 billion.

The compute race extends well beyond Tesla. A separate Reuters report last December documented hundreds of billions of dollars flowing into AI infrastructure as companies secure chips, cloud capacity and power.
