AMD is getting cutting-edge spatial-intelligence models, but more importantly, a leader who can help recruit top talent and bring real-world AI applications into focus

Advanced Micro Devices is paying $8.2 billion for a company at the cutting edge of real-world artificial intelligence - but perhaps more importantly, AMD is bringing aboard a visionary leader.

As part of the chip maker's recently announced deal for World Labs, that company's founder, Fei-Fei Li, plans to join AMD (AMD) as its chief scientist.

Recognized in the industry as the godmother of AI, Li "is arguably the highest-value asset" from the deal, StoneX analyst Cody Acree said. Li made her mark by creating a database of millions of annotated images called ImageNet that was critical to modern AI development. The image database, which she started in 2006, was used to train and test early models.

That Li is reporting directly to AMD CEO Lisa Su will give research on leading AI models and applications "unusually high visibility" at the company, Acree said in a note to clients.

World Labs, which was founded in 2024, develops spatial-intelligence models that can generate and simulate three-dimensional environments using text, image and video inputs. The company is focused on world models, or those that can predict physical, real-word dynamics the way large language models predict text.

Li's presence at the company could also be a boon for AMD's credibility among AI researchers and therefore help with recruiting talent, Acree said. That could in turn improve its Instinct graphics processing units and ROCm software, which allows developers to use its hardware for AI and high-performance computing tasks, he added.

"To bring on someone in a chief technologist role specific to AI shows the direction of the company," Paul Meeks, head of technology research at Freedom Capital Markets said.

Through the acquisition, AMD is showing it's "serious and well-positioned" for physical AI, which will be a major driver for the AI ecosystem, he told MarketWatch.

Still, AMD will have to prove it can translate its research strength into broad adoption of its technology, according to Joe Tigay, a portfolio manager at Equity Armor Investments.

While Tigay sees a near-term benefit for AMD with World Labs training and running its models on the company's graphics processing units - which could also draw in other customers - the longer-term advantage, such as with robotics, remains to be seen, he said.

"A convincing virtual world is a long way from a robot that works reliably in a warehouse or a home," Tigay said, adding that the proof of how the acquisition helps AMD will come from customer deployments and GPU sales, for now.

Although the deal "wasn't received as a home run in the market," Meeks said it's a solid move for a company looking to pick up market share in the broader world of chips.

AMD's stock was up fractionally on Tuesday afternoon.
