Tesla has further strengthened its domestic supply chain, announcing it has built the first Cybercab using nickel cathode material produced at its own factory in Austin, Texas.

The company shared the milestone through its Robotaxi account on Wednesday, saying the material came from what it calls the first cathode plant in the Americas.

It is a small update about what is for nor a low-volume vehicle, but it an important one for Tesla’s battery plans and domestic supply chain. Cathode material is a key ingredient in a lithium-ion cell, and Tesla has spent years working to bring more of its 4680 battery production under its own roof.

Cathode material has a major influence on a battery’s cost and performance, making it one of the most consequential parts of the cell to produce in-house. By making it in Austin, Tesla gains more control over production and reduces its reliance on outside suppliers.

The Austin cathode plant was first proposed in 2022 on land beside Giga Texas. Four year later, Tesla said the facility was operating at scale as part of its 4680 cell production last month. The Cybercab announcement is the first time the company has said material from that plant has made it into one of the vehicles.

It also follows another Texas battery milestone earlier this month. On September 4, Tesla said it had built the first Cybertruck with 4680 cells containing lithium processed at its Gulf Coast refinery. That facility supplies lithium hydroxide to Tesla’s battery operations in Austin, adding another step to the company’s domestic supply chain.
