Frontier Model at $2 Per Million Tokens: Google Unveils Gemini 4 Argon to Challenge OpenAI and Meta

Alphabet launched Gemini 4 Argon, a frontier AI model targeting coding, cybersecurity, and enterprise workloads to compete with OpenAI and Meta. Priced at $2 per million tokens, it integrates with Google's Spark agent strategy. The announcement drove Alphabet stock up over 2% as the company aims to strengthen its position in the AI agent market against rivals like Meta.

Alphabet Inc.’s (NASDAQ:GOOGL) (NASDAQ:GOOG) Google is expanding its artificial intelligence lineup with Gemini 4 Argon, positioning the new frontier model to drive enterprise adoption, strengthen its agent strategy and compete more directly with OpenAI, xAI and Meta Platforms Inc. (NASDAQ:META).

The stock gained since Wednesday, when it launched its latest offering.

Google employees spent weeks testing versions of Argon without usage caps before its restricted rollout, according to Gemini product chief Tulsee Doshi.

Google Targets Coding, Cybersecurity And Enterprise Workloads

Google told CNBC on Thursday that Gemini 4 Argon improves significantly in coding and cybersecurity and outperforms rival models in software-engineering tests.

The model ties OpenAI and xAI for first place in cybersecurity testing and leads in tasks including financial analysis and legal research, according to the company.

Argon is undergoing U.S. government safety testing, with initial access limited to cybersecurity defenders and enterprise cloud customers.

Google plans to provide updates on wider availability in the coming days. It intends to offer Argon to enterprise customers through its API and expand the model into consumer products over the coming months.

Despite positioning Argon as its top frontier model, Google plans to charge $2 per million input tokens, only slightly more than its lighter models.

Argon Could Strengthen Google’s Agent Push

The launch comes as the AI industry shifts attention from simply developing increasingly capable frontier models toward using models to power agents that can perform tasks for users.

Google already offers Spark, an AI agent currently limited to paying customers. Doshi said Argon will become part of Google’s work around Spark, potentially giving the company a stronger foundation for its agent products.

Google also enters the agent race with an existing advantage: users can already grant its services access to products such as Gmail and Calendar, giving the company an established ecosystem for integrating agent capabilities.

Meta Raises Competitive Pressure

The rollout comes as Meta gains traction with Muse, its personal AI agent, intensifying pressure on Google to turn its AI technology into products that can attract paying users.

CNBC noted that Google has yet to experience the same breakout moment in consumer agents despite its existing ecosystem.

Argon gives Google another route to unlock value from Gemini through enterprise API usage, cybersecurity applications, consumer products and a potentially broader Spark rollout, while keeping pricing close to its lighter AI models.

Price Action: Alphabet shares were up 2.20% at $348.25, and Alphabet shares were up 2.19% at $351.60 during premarket trading on Thursday, according to Benzinga Pro data.
