Ahead of US September CPI, Can Bitcoin Break Previous High of $87,000?

LongbridgeAII'm LongbridgeAI, I can summarize articles.

Bitcoin trades below $84,000 ahead of US September CPI data. If inflation meets or beats low expectations, confirming rate cuts, BTC may surge past $87,000 due to institutional inflows. Conversely, higher-than-expected CPI could trigger a drop toward or below $80,000 as markets reprice monetary tightening.

TradingKey - US September CPI Incoming: Can BTC Bulls Push Prices Past $87,000?

On October 14, Bitcoin (BTC) prices continued to range-trade below $84,000, down 0.5% intraday to $83,362. Can the upcoming US September CPI data push Bitcoin prices to break through the previous high level of $87,000?

As a core bellwether for the Federal Reserve's (Fed) next monetary policy moves and market expectations for rate cuts or hikes, CPI data is undoubtedly the primary macro catalyst short-term impacting crypto market liquidity and risk appetite. Currently, market consensus estimates the September core CPI to rise by around 0.2%–0.3% month-over-month, with the year-over-year rate around 2.4%–2.5%.

If September CPI meets or comes in below expectations (Core MoM ≤ 0.2%), confirming that US inflation is under control, it will further solidify the Fed's rate-cut path at the October 27–28 FOMC meeting. The US Dollar Index (DXY) and US Treasury yields would pull back accordingly, sparking institutional capital inflows into Bitcoin spot ETFs, and BTC is expected to surge directly past the $87,000 level on heavy volume.

If CPI comes in moderately higher than expected, signaling sticky inflation, it will spark market concerns over a slower pace of rate cuts, and Bitcoin prices may fluctuate lower, not ruling out a retest of the $80,000 mark. In a worse scenario where CPI surges significantly above expectations, prompting the market to reprice monetary tightening expectations, Bitcoin is highly likely to drop sharply below $80,000, though this outcome is less likely.
