Microsoft abandoned a UK data center deal with Nscale due to grid power delays, highlighting AI infrastructure constraints. Nscale remains committed and seeks alternative power sources.

Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ:MSFT) has abandoned a U.K. data center deal with Nscale amid power constraints at the project site, exposing a growing obstacle to the rapid expansion of AI infrastructure.

Power Shortages Derail Microsoft Deal

Microsoft withdrew from Nscale’s planned data center in Loughton, Essex, amid uncertainty over electricity supply.

Reuters on Sunday cited the Telegraph as reporting that grid officials do not expect the site to receive power until the 2030s.

The Financial Times reported that Microsoft planned to lease the facility’s entire 50-megawatt capacity. The site was expected to house approximately 23,000 NVIDIA Corp. (NASDAQ:NVDA) GB300 chips as part of Microsoft’s broader U.K. AI investment.

Microsoft declined to comment to Bloomberg and Reuters.

Nscale Maintains Microsoft Partnership

Nscale said it remains committed to the project and is exploring alternative power sources and expansion sites.

The company also said its long-term relationship with Microsoft remains strong and that London’s grid constraints would not affect other contracts.

Bloomberg reported that Microsoft and Anthropic account for roughly 85% of Nscale’s contracts. However, the Financial Times said the Essex project represents a small portion of Microsoft’s overall business with Nscale.

IPO Plans Face Fresh Challenges

The setback comes as Nscale prepares for a potential IPO as early as this month, with the company seeking to raise up to $3 billion, according to Bloomberg.

The development follows mounting investor concerns over debt-funded AI infrastructure expansion.

CoreWeave Inc. (NASDAQ:CRWV) recently recorded its worst weekly performance since November amid financing concerns. Separately, Firmus abandoned its IPO after struggling to attract investors at its proposed valuation.

AI Expansion Faces Power and Funding Risks

The Financial Times reported that Nscale faces potential penalties if it misses data center delivery deadlines.

Anthropic could also exit a $45 billion agreement linked to Nscale’s West Virginia project if financing or delivery milestones are missed.

The developments highlight how power availability, funding and construction delays could slow AI infrastructure expansion despite strong demand for computing capacity.

MSFT Price Action: Microsoft shares were up 0.30% at $530.65 during premarket trading on Monday, according to Benzinga Pro data.
