$UOB(U11.SG)announced a 1H 2026 interim dividend of S$0.88 per share, with the ex-dividend date on 17 August 2026. At the same time, UOB reported a strong 2Q26, with net profit rising 10% YoY to around S$1.5 billion. The bank also highlighted strong growth in wealth management and continued momentum across its ASEAN businesses.

Seeing the upcoming dividend and UOB's solid business performance, I thought the share price around S$41.70 offered an attractive opportunity to enter. My thinking was that UOB could provide both dividend income and potential long-term capital appreciation.

I decided to buy UOB shares at S$41.70 on 13 August 2026.

The timing was just before the 17 August ex-dividend date, so I was also eligible for the S$0.88 interim dividend, assuming I met the relevant entitlement requirements.

After the ex-dividend date, the share price declined, closing at S$40.64 on 27 August, compared with my purchase price of S$41.70.

For UOB, I'm comfortable continuing to hold because I see it as a combination of dividend income + ASEAN growth + a strong banking franchise, rather than simply a dividend trade.

$Soon Hock(SHE.SG)The company announced a dividend of S$0.0305 per share, with an ex-dividend date of 25 June. At that time, the share price was relatively low at around S$0.64, so I saw the combination of a low share price and upcoming dividend as an attractive opportunity.

Therefore,I decided to buy the shares at around S$0.64.

However, after my purchase, the share price dropped to around S$0.59 and did not recover to the S$0.64 level during the next two months.

After holding the position for about two months, I decided to liquidate my position at S$0.60 so that I could free up my capital for other trading opportunities.

This trade taught me an important lesson: I should not buy a stock simply because it offers an attractive dividend.

A dividend may look appealing, but it doesn't guarantee that the share price will perform well.

$Microsoft(MSFT.US)is spending an enormous amount on AI data centres and infrastructure. Its FY2026 capital expenditure and finance leases reached roughly US$175 billion, with around US$116 billion of that being property and equipment spending. The concern of most investor is how quickly will all this AI spending generate enough additional profit and free cash flow?

This became particularly visible on 17 August, when MSFT fell about 3.0% to US$480.35, wiping around US$112 billion from its market value. Investors were reassessing the returns on Microsoft's massive AI infrastructure investments.

Investors are increasingly concerned about the amount of capital being poured into AI infrastructure. The market is beginning to question whether AI revenue will grow quickly enough to justify the industry's enormous capex commitments.

So when sentiment toward AI stocks weakens, Microsoft can be affected even when its own quarterly results remain strong.

On 30 July, Microsoft shares jumped more than 15% in one day after its earnings and Azure outlook, adding almost US$450 billion to its market value—the largest one-day market-cap gain ever recorded by a company.

After such a dramatic rally, investors naturally become more sensitive to any concerns about valuation, margins or AI spending.

In short, market isn't asking "Is Microsoft growing?" anymore. It's asking "Is Microsoft making enough money from AI to justify how much it is spending on AI?"That is the key reason MSFT has been volatile in August 2026.

$Amova-StraitsTrdg Asia REIT(CFA.SG)paid a distribution of S$0.011 per unit on 3 August 2026, following its 1 July ex-dividend date and 2 July record date. SGX subsequently published the tax-treatment breakdown, including a taxable-income component of S$0.008703 per unit.Based on the latest trailing distribution data, CFA's trailing dividend yield is around 6.3%, with distributions paid quarterly.

However, I would not assume the 6%+ yield is guaranteed going forward because CFA's distributions depend on the income generated by its underlying REIT holdings.

The ETF's recent market price was around S$0.796, while its 52-week range was approximately S$0.76–S$0.826.

So CFA is currently trading near the lower end of its 52-week range, which may be interesting for investors focused on income.

In short, I would describe CFA as more attractive for income investors than growth investors,, particularly if you believe Asian REITs will benefit from a more favourable interest-rate environment. But I would not buy CFA solely because the yield looks high. I would also look at interest-rate direction, underlying REIT DPU growth, gearing/refinancing costs and whether the ETF's NAV continues to recover.CFA's main advantage is diversification, while individual REITs can offer more targeted exposure and potentially higher upside.

$Grab(GRAB.US)management increased its full-year 2026 guidance to revenue US$4.10–4.15 billion and adjusted EBITDA: US$720–740 million

This is a positive signal because management is becoming more confident about the underlying business momentum.

Financial Services revenue increased 59% YoY to US$134 million.

The gross loan portfolio reached US$2.3 billion, almost triple the year-ago level, while loans disbursed during the quarter reached US$1.2 billion. Customer deposits across GXS Bank, GXBank and SupeSuperbankched US$2.5 billion.Grab also completed its acquisition of Stash Financial in July, with the business expected to be consolidated starting Q3.

This could become an important second growth engine alongside Mobility and Deliveries.

Grab says its AI/"intelligence layer" is now embedded throughout the platform, with the goal of improving driver and merchant earnings while increasing operational efficiency.

More recently, Grab announced an AI Call-a-Ride pilot aimed at making ride booking easier for seniors, initially supporting English and Chinese.

This is still early-stage, but it shows Grab is trying to use AI not just as a technology feature, but to improve the economics of its platform.

I would view Grab as a much more mature and financially disciplined growth company than it was a few years ago, but valuation and execution still matter.I'm cautiously bullish on GRAB's business fundamentals. The most encouraging development is that growth is now being accompanied by meaningful EBITDA expansion, rather than Grab simply buying market share at the expense of profitability. The next major test is whether Grab can maintain 20%+ GMV/revenue growth while continuing to expand margins. If it can, the current business model becomes considerably more attractive.

$JD-SW(09618.HK)entered China's highly competitive food-delivery market aggressively, which previously put considerable pressure on profitability.

The latest results suggest that losses in the food-delivery business are narrowing, helping JD's overall earnings recover. Analysts are watching whether JD can continue reducing promotional spending while retaining customers and market share. This is an important positive for the stock because investors previously worried that the food-delivery expansion could become a prolonged cash drain.

JD's proposed US$2.5 billion acquisition of German electronics retailer Ceconomy is facing regulatory scrutiny from the European Union.

The EU is investigating whether JD may have benefited from foreign subsidies that could distort competition. China has now instructed domestic entities not to assist or cooperate with the EU investigation, escalating the issue. The deal could give JD a significant European retail presence through MediaMarkt and Saturn, but regulatory uncertainty has become an additional risk.

In short,JD is doing a good job improving profitability, but the 2.9% revenue decline is the main concern.

For a long-term investor, I would not view the August sell-off purely as bad news. If JD can achieve what management expects—a meaningful recovery in electronics sales in 2H while continuing to reduce food-delivery losses—the earnings outlook could improve.

On the other hand, if revenue continues declining despite lower costs, the market may continue to treat the stock as a value trap rather than a growth story.

$CapitaLandInvest(9CI.SG)held its 1H 2026 results briefing on 13 August 2026. The company continues to focus on growing its asset-light, fee-driven fund-management business. The bigger structural story is that CapitaLandInvest’s Funds under Management (FUM) stood at about S$125 billion as of 31 March 2026, up 7% from a year earlier. This is important because increasing FUM can generate more recurring management fees without requiring CLI to own all the underlying assets itself.

One notable development is that CLI established a RMB3.15 billion private REIT in China, described by the company as China's largest private REIT sponsored by an international asset manager. This is potentially important because CLI is trying to recycle capital and scale its China investment-management platform rather than simply relying on traditional property development. However, China also remains one of the higher-risk parts of the business because of the country's property-market weakness and economic uncertainty.

I would describe CLI as a long-term asset-management growth story rather than a conventional property developer. The most interesting part of the story is not simply the property portfolio,it is the transformation toward a larger, asset-light global real-asset manager. Its S$125 billion FUM base and growing listed/private fund platform give it a potentially attractive long-term growth runway. If FUM growth, fee income, fundraising, operating PATMI and capital recycling continue improving, the investment case becomes considerably stronger.

If you are considering Gold & Silver Daily Leverage Certificates (DLCs) on SGX, my main advice is to treat them as short-term trading instruments, not long-term investments because

1. DLCs reset their leverage daily. Because of daily compounding, holding a 5x DLC for several days does not necessarily produce 5 times the underlying's total return. SGX's own product documentation specifically warns that performance over periods longer than one day can differ substantially from the stated daily leverage. So please don't treat "5x" as 5x of the overall return

2. Gold and silver can move very quickly.Silver is generally more volatile than gold because it also has significant industrial demand.

Due to very large intraday price swings, this type of product are not suitable for inexperienced investors

3. If you are bullish on gold, for example, a Gold Long DLC makes sense only if your expectation is that gold will rise over the relevant short-term trading period. If gold moves against you, the leverage works against you just as quickly. For someone who isn't comfortable monitoring prices actively, a normal gold ETF is generally much easier to manage.

My overall view is that Gold/Silver DLCs can be useful tools when you have a strong short-term view and are comfortable with leverage. The attraction is obvious: you can obtain significant exposure without putting up the full amount required for the underlying.

But the biggest mistake would be to think "Gold is a long-term safe-haven asset, therefore a 5x Gold DLC is a good long-term investment.’

Gold itself can be suitable as a portfolio diversifier over the long term; a daily leveraged certificate is designed for short-term tactical exposure

If your objective is long-term exposure to gold/silver - consider an unleveraged ETF.

If your objective is short-term directional trading - DLCs can be considered, but use strict position sizing and an exit plan.

$Soon Hock(SHE.SG)profits are heavily influenced by the completion and recognition of property development projects.

That means a strong year does not necessarily mean earnings will continue at the same level. Once a major project is completed and revenue is recognised, earnings can fall sharply while the company waits for the next project to contribute. This makes company’s profit less predictable than companies with recurring revenue.

This stock is considerably smaller and less liquid than names such as DBS, UOB or SGX.This means a relatively small amount of selling can move the share price significantly. It may be harder to exit a large position quickly.

while the share price can remain weak even without major negative news.

After this buying experience, I have learnt that’ Dividend shouldn't be the main reason to buy stock’ Especially for a property developer company, dividends can fluctuate depending on project cash flows,Development expenditure,Working-capital requirements and Management's capital allocation decisions. So investors shouldn't assume today's dividend level will necessarily continue indefinitely.

Moving forward I would be more cautious when investing in small-cap property developer, because its earnings and share price can be much more volatile than established Singapore blue chips.

$SIA(C6L.SG)isn't cutting back on its long-term growth strategy. It plans to expand its European network, launch Madrid services from October 2026, and start daily services to Western Sydney International Airport from November.SIA also continues to deepen partnerships, including its commercial cooperation with Air China.I will describe SIA in August as "strong core airline, but facing an unusually difficult earnings environment."I would not interpret SIA's recent loss as evidence that its core airline business is fundamentally weak. The underlying demand picture is actually quite encouraging as the record revenue and passenger numbers demonstrate that.

The bigger concern is that fuel costs + Air India losses are currently absorbing the benefits of that strong demand.

For a long-term investor, SIA becomes more interesting if the share price weakness starts to reflect the current earnings pressure without assuming a permanent deterioration in the core business. The two things I would watch most closely are jet-fuel prices and Air India's cash requirements.

$UOB(U11.SG)reported Q2 2026 net profit of about S$1.5 billion, up 10% YoY, beating analysts' expectations of around S$1.4 billion. The main driver was record wealth-management fee income. This is significant because lower interest rates have been putting pressure on banks' lending margins, but UOB has been able to offset some of that pressure through fee-based businesses.

UOB's wealth-management revenue reached a record S$717 million in Q2. The broader Singapore banking sector is benefiting from strong wealth inflows into Singapore, particularly from affluent clients across Asia. This diversification is positive for UOB because it reduces its dependence on net interest income.

One point investors should pay attention to: UOB reduced its fee-income growth forecast, citing delayed deals and weaker card-fee income. Trading income also declined by around 8%, which means not every part of its non-interest business is accelerating. So while the Q2 headline profit was strong, the market may remain cautious about how sustainable the growth is.

The more important question for the next few quarters is whether wealth/fee income and ASEAN growth can consistently compensate for declining interest margins. If they can, UOB's earnings should remain resilient.

$DBS(D05.SG)Following the earnings announcement, DBS shares rose around 3% to S$75.80, reaching a new all-time high. The strongest areas were: Wealth management fees: +42% YoY to a record S$919 million and Net fee income: S$1.46 billion.Treasury customer sales and trading income also recorded strong growth.Assets under management exceeded S$500 billion for the first time.

This is important because it shows DBS is increasingly able to offset pressure from lower interest rates through wealth management, fees and markets-related businesses.

Following the strong first-half performance, DBS raised its full-year guidance and now expects 2026 total income to exceed 2025 levels. This upgrade was one of the major reasons investors became more bullish on DBS.DBS declared a Q2 dividend of S$0.81 per share, which was higher than the previous year. Its strong capital position and cash generation continue to support shareholder returns. This is particularly attractive for investors looking for a combination of capital appreciation + dividend income.

DBS continues to look like a strong core Singapore blue-chip holding. The latest results are encouraging because the bank is demonstrating that its earnings can remain resilient even as interest margins come under pressure.

However, after the stock's strong run and record highs, I would be more comfortable accumulating on pullbacks rather than chasing a sharp rally.

$SIA(C6L.SG)reported a S$76 million net loss for the quarter ended 30 June 2026, compared with a S$186 million profit a year earlier. This was the first quarterly loss since the COVID period. The surprising part is that revenue was actually very strong at S$5.71 billion, +19.3% YoY.So the problem was not a lack of demand.Net fuel costs jumped 78.5% to S$2.25 billion, largely because of the surge in jet-fuel prices following the Middle East conflict.

As a result, operating profit plunged 73.8% to S$106 million, despite record revenue.

This is probably the most important issue for investors right now: SIA is generating strong revenue, but higher fuel costs are absorbing a large portion of the additional revenue.SIA's 25.1% stake in Air India remains another concern.

The airline recorded a S$42 million larger share of losses from Air India in the latest quarter. There are also growing concerns that Air India may require additional capital as it goes through its turnaround.

This has become an increasingly important part of the SIA investment story because shareholders are now looking not only at SIA's airline operations, but also at the amount of capital and earnings drag coming from Air India. For a long-term investor, I'd therefore view the current situation as higher risk but potentially interesting if fuel prices normalise. The key question is whether the current fuel-cost shock is temporary or becomes a prolonged drag on earnings.

I view $Amova-StraitsTrdg Asia REIT(CFA.SG) as a solid income-focused ETF rather than a high-growth investment. It's suitable for investors looking for regular dividends, diversification, and exposure to Asia-Pacific REITs through a single investment.

What I like is its attractive dividend yieldCFA has consistently paid quarterly distributions, with a trailing dividend yield of around 6% based on recent prices. This makes it appealing for investors seeking passive income.

Instead of buying individual REITs, one investment provides exposure to about 48 REITs across Asia ex-Japan.REITs generally perform better when borrowing costs decline. If central banks continue easing monetary policy over the next 12–24 months, REIT valuations and distributions could receive additional support. The ETF has an expense ratio of around 0.55–0.60%, which is relatively reasonable for gaining diversified regional REIT exposure in a single trade.

It may be less suitable for investors seeking rapid capital growth, as REIT ETFs typically offer steadier, income-oriented returns. If interest rates gradually decline over the next few years, I believe CFA could benefit from improving REIT valuations and lower financing costs for its underlying holdings

For investors whose primary goal is stable passive income with moderate long-term growth, CFA is one of the stronger REIT ETF options listed on the SGX.

Following its blockbuster earnings release, $Microsoft(MSFT.US)shares have continued to climb in early August. According to MarketWatch, the stock recorded its strongest three-day rally since October 2000, gaining nearly 25% over the period and erasing its earlier year-to-date losses. The recent share price surge reflects a shift in investor sentiment—from questioning whether Microsoft's AI spending would pay off to believing that the company is successfully monetising AI at scale. The combination of stronger-than-expected Azure growth, rising Copilot adoption, robust cash flow, and optimistic management guidance has reinforced Microsoft's position as one of the leading beneficiaries of the AI revolution. After the sharp rally, expectations are now very high. Any slowdown in Azure growth or AI adoption could lead to increased volatility.Microsoft is still spending aggressively on AI infrastructure. Investors will continue to monitor whether these investments translate into sustained earnings growth.Although Microsoft continues investing heavily in AI infrastructure and data centres, management indicated it expects to maintain healthy cash generation and does not anticipate negative free cash flow during the new fiscal year. This helped ease concerns that capital expenditure would weigh excessively on profitability.

$Soon Hock(SHE.SG)Soon Hock's share price climbed from around S$0.56 after its IPO to a high of about S$0.655 earlier . Some investors may simply be locking in profits after the strong run.The stock went ex-dividend in late June 2026. On the ex-dividend date, a share price typically falls by approximately the dividend amount because new buyers are no longer entitled to receive that dividend.FY2025 earnings were boosted by revenue recognition from completed projects, particularly Stellar@Tampines. While the reported results were strong, investors are now focused on whether the company can sustain earnings growth from its next projects. Some analysts expect earnings to moderate over the next few years because property development earnings are project-based and can be uneven from year to year. This may have made some investors more cautious despite the company's healthy project pipeline. The next key catalyst will be the company's upcoming financial results and updates on the sales and construction progress of its development projects. Hopefully management can demonstrates that the earnings pipeline remains healthy, that could help improve investor sentiment.

$Microsoft(MSFT.US)sharp share price increase on 30 July 2026 was driven primarily by a strong quarterly earnings report that exceeded Wall Street's expectations.Management projected Q1 FY2027 revenue of approximately US$90.4 billion (midpoint), ahead of market expectations. The upbeat outlook reassured investors that AI-driven demand remains strong.Investors had been concerned that Microsoft's heavy AI spending might take years to pay off. However, management highlighted more than 30 million paid Microsoft 365 Copilot users and a US$678 billion commercial cloud backlog, indicating strong future demand.Although Microsoft continues to invest aggressively in AI infrastructure, it generated US$19.6 billion in free cash flow during the quarter. This helped reassure investors that the company can continue funding AI expansion while maintaining strong financial performance. For long-term investors, these results reinforce Microsoft's position as one of the leading beneficiaries of the ongoing AI transformation. I see $SGX(S68.SG) as one of Singapore's highest-quality blue-chip companies because of its resilient business model, consistent dividend record, and ability to benefit from growing capital market activity.SGX recently reported a 72% year-on-year increase in securities trading value for June, capping a very strong FY2026. Higher trading activity directly supports transaction and clearing income.

SGX continues to expand beyond traditional exchange services, such as

introducing Singapore Depository Receipts (SDRs) for companies such as Grab, Sea and SpaceX, allowing investors to trade them in SGD during local market hours.Supporting Singapore's efforts to deepen its capital markets and attract more listings and investors.SGX has a long track record of paying dividends and generates strong cash flow with relatively low capital expenditure requirements, making it appealing for income-focused investors.Unlike high-growth technology stocks, SGX is more of a steady compounder. Microsoft is expected to report its next quarterly results next week. The market will be watching closely for Azure cloud revenue growth, AI-related revenue and Copilot adoption, capital expenditure (AI infrastructure spending) and management's outlook for the coming quarters

$Microsoft(MSFT.US)With the stock trading near record highs, expectations are elevated, so even strong results will need to meet or exceed market forecasts. The main risk isn't the quality of the business but is the high expectations already reflected in the share price. The CFA ETF announced a quarterly cash distribution of S$0.011001 per unit.

Based on the current unit price, the forward dividend yield is around 5.5%, continuing its track record of quarterly distributions. The ETF continues to benefit from improving sentiment toward Asian REITs as investors anticipate lower interest rates over time. Its exposure spans multiple sectors, including:Industrial REITs,Retail REITs,Office REITs,Data centre REITs and Diversified REITs

This diversification helps reduce reliance on any single property segment.Recent fund data shows around 6–7% total return over the past year (including reinvested distributions). The ETF has recovered from the weakness seen during the higher interest rate environment, although year-to-date performance has been relatively flat.If your objective is steady income with moderate long-term capital appreciation, I think CFA deserves consideration as a core income holding within a diversified portfolio. It is less suitable for investors seeking high-growth returns, but it can complement growth-oriented holdings such as technology stocks or broad-market ETFs.

While insider buying does not guarantee future performance, it is often viewed as a sign of management's confidence in the business.Soon Hock is transitioning from a traditional operator into a more established industrial property developer, with a visible pipeline that could support earnings over the next few years. For investors comfortable with small-cap Singapore property stocks, it offers exposure to the industrial real estate sector with potential upside from project completions.

However, because its earnings are closely tied to the timing of development milestones, investors should expect more variability in financial results compared with larger, diversified developers or REITs. A key catalyst to watch will be the company's next earnings update and progress on its ongoing development projects.

If I were building a long-term Singapore portfolio, SGX would be one of my core holdings alongside companies like DBS and UOB.

I do not expect SGX to deliver explosive growth like an AI or technology company. Instead, I view it as a steady compounder, a business that can grow earnings and dividends consistently over many years. The key catalysts I would watch are the continued strength in securities and derivatives trading volumes and the progress of the EQDP and other Singapore capital market reforms. For investors with a 5–10 year horizon, SGX remains one of the most attractive Singapore blue-chip stocks for balancing capital preservation, dividend income, and moderate long-term growth.
