OVERNIGHT US SUMMARY

Wall Street closed mixed Tuesday. Dow up 1.03% to 52,747.32 and S&P 500 up 0.21% to 7,428.78 on strong Coca-Cola and Boeing earnings, Nasdaq down 0.22% to 24,876.91 as the semiconductor rotation kept running, Micron down 8.8% and AMD down 8.1%. VIX rose 8.25% to 18.24, real caution even with two of three indices higher. That chip weakness is the direct overnight line into UMS and CSE Global here.

SGX PRE-OPEN PULSE

STI last close, 28 July, 5,616.1, down 0.07%. MAS reported a S$20 billion annual profit this morning, investment gains offsetting a hefty currency translation hit from SGD strength, a reminder of how firm the local dollar has run. Brent fell again overnight, though sources disagree materially on the settlement level, treat it as lower and volatile rather than a specific number this morning.

Still the heaviest volume name on my radar most sessions. The core read has not moved, headline yield leans on a distribution piece funded by asset sales rather than the operating business, strength in the stock does not close that gap.

IGGY'S GAME PLAN

Watching whether the chip rotation extends into Singapore's semiconductor equipment names or starts to stabilise today. MAS's own currency hit is a reminder that a strong SGD cuts both ways, good for imported costs, a headwind for anything priced or earned offshore. Kopi money still buys the same cup either way, that discipline does not change with one index print.

Though Nvidia lowers and there is tension between US and China over AI due to lack of factual and legal basis, S&P and Dow shares increases and Apple becomes the most valuable company again. This feels like companies’ battle to survive and live.

Oil prices are rising, it's like buying options or shorting stocks. If you guess right, you take profits. But as time passes, it will cause a rapid discount. Be careful, the volatility is huge.

MAS policy tightening strengthens the SGD and keeps interest rates elevated—benefiting Singapore banks via resilient interest margins and wealth inflows, while headwinding S-REITs through higher refinancing costs.

Local banks continue to push past resistance to pursue new highs as STI strengthens. A surprising underdog as our local market is currently outperforming the S&P500 by a whopping 10%, considering that many, even locals, think that the STI is a boring and dead market. Of course, a large portion of this success must be credited to the big 3 banks, who carried most of the index for the large part of the year. What I want to see is how long can this strength continue, and even when it does retrace, how big will the pullback be.

Iran announced that they are not "at a full scale war with US". Markets recovered slightly following the news as oil tumbles back between $90 and $100. I wouldn't take anything for granted, especially when we are in the midst of earnings season, where volatility is completely expected and normal. With more big cap companies reporting this week and the past trend of Capex dragging down share prices, I won't be surprised to see more dips coming.

The outcome of the peace negotiations is still up in the air, when Trump is one of the parties involved. I expect local banks to hit new high as the next earnings are expected to be good.

Brent crude oil is falling significantly back to around $90, following a pause in strikes by the US and Iran over the weekend, although negotiations are ongoing rather than an official ceasefire; it closed at $96.28 on Friday after trading above $100 for several weeks.

The 顺势 (following the trend) decline in oil prices is a positive development for energy-importing Singapore.

Global energy costs in June impacted consumer prices, leading to high core inflation in Singapore. Consequently, the Monetary Authority of Singapore has tightened monetary policy, creating a chain reaction.

Excluding this specific anomalous outlier, the true, fundamental blended earnings growth across the rest of the S&P 500 drops back down to a more normalized 25.9%. This reveals that VOO’s immediate valuation backdrop is actually far more grounded and less overheated than headline data suggests, while its forward P/E ratio sits at a reasonable 20.1. For disciplined wealth building, buying into these consolidation levels provides highly stable exposure to solid underlying corporate fundamentals, stripping out misleading headline noise.
