SpaceX delivers just when Tech needs a hero to save them. Much like those shows where the hero shows up and galvanises everybody to go on and win, this might be the moment Tech find its footing and strength!

The US markets rebounded last night but it needs to hold the lows and follow up for this to be a sustainable rally or even a bottom before new highs.

It was another one of those days for Tech last Friday. Lots of panic and hedging for Tech whilst non-Tech actually did ok.

Context: What has caught my attention recently is the extraordinary initial response to Apple’s new foldable iPhone Duo. With prices starting at US$1,999 and preorder delivery estimates already stretching into January, Apple may have found a way to breathe new life into a mature smartphone market. The interesting part isn’t simply the folding screen, but the possibility of establishing an entirely new premium tier above its existing Pro models.

My trade: I’m increasingly interested in Apple’s ability to grow revenue through higher-value products rather than relying purely on selling more devices. If the Duo gains sustained traction, it could lift average selling prices and create another meaningful growth opportunity. Of course, early preorder enthusiasm doesn’t necessarily guarantee long-term success, especially with production constraints and manufacturing costs still important considerations.

Takeaway: Sometimes growth doesn’t require finding millions of new customers. It comes from giving existing customers a compelling reason to spend more. Apple’s next opportunity may not be about winning the smartphone volume race, but about expanding what consumers are willing to pay for a truly differentiated experience.

Context: What has become increasingly interesting to me about MaxLinear is that its AI opportunity may be expanding well beyond optical transceivers. While its Keystone 800G DSP platform continues to ramp, the company is also moving into the less visible infrastructure needed to manage increasingly complex AI systems. Its new RackCommander portfolio brings together connectivity, monitoring, power protection and control technologies for next-generation AI racks.

My trade: I initially viewed MXL primarily as an optical connectivity play, benefiting from the transition toward 800G and eventually 1.6T networking. But the broader product expansion adds another dimension to the thesis. If MaxLinear can leverage existing hyperscaler relationships to supply more components across each AI rack, its revenue opportunity could grow beyond optical bandwidth upgrades alone.

Takeaway: Sometimes the biggest opportunity isn’t simply selling a faster component. It’s becoming increasingly embedded in the architecture surrounding it. For MXL, the next phase of growth could come from supplying more of the essential silicon that makes an entire AI rack function reliably — not just the chips that move data between racks.

Will CPI bring a pleasant boost to the markets? The markets have been rotating hard from tech to financials and value which indicates they are expecting more economic growth but with an increase in borrowing costs.

Context: What caught my attention recently was UMS’s RM450 million capital raising exercise. With semiconductor demand strengthening and new customer programmes ramping up, the company is investing further in automation and manufacturing capacity across Penang, Singapore and Vietnam. More importantly, its first-half 2026 net profit grew 66%, suggesting that the expansion story is already beginning to translate into stronger earnings.

My trade: I increasingly see UMS as a capacity monetisation opportunity rather than simply another semiconductor equipment supplier. The additional funding gives it room to support growing customer demand, but the new shares also introduce dilution. For me, the important question is whether higher production volumes, better utilisation and improved operating leverage can more than compensate for that dilution.

Takeaway: Raising capital is easy compared with turning it into profitable growth. The next chapter for UMS isn’t just about building more factories — it’s about making every dollar invested in those factories work harder for shareholders. That’s the execution story I’ll be watching closely.

Some tech events are going on this week with Optics, Apple and the bell-weather of Tech, TSM, as well reporting later in the week. Might see some tech names do well if TSM posts good numbers.

Context: What caught my attention recently was AMD’s announced $8.2 billion acquisition of World Labs, the spatial AI company led by Fei-Fei Li. This is an interesting strategic shift. Rather than focusing solely on developing faster CPUs and GPUs, AMD is bringing AI model research expertise directly into its ecosystem, particularly in robotics, simulation and physical AI.

My trade: I increasingly see AMD as a company trying to influence how future AI workloads are built, rather than simply supplying the hardware to run them. Understanding how models evolve could help AMD design more efficient compute architectures and improve the relationship between its silicon, software and AI applications. The opportunity is compelling, although integrating such an ambitious acquisition brings execution and dilution risks.

Takeaway: The next competitive advantage in AI may come from understanding the workload before designing the hardware. AMD is making a bet that the future of computing belongs not just to those who build the fastest chips, but to those who understand what tomorrow’s intelligence will actually need.

Context: What interests me about gold today is the changing relationship between government bonds and safe-haven demand. Traditionally, rising bond yields have been negative for gold. But when those yields rise because investors are increasingly concerned about government debt, fiscal sustainability and monetary credibility, the picture becomes much more complicated.

My trade: I continue to view my GLD SG position as exposure to that broader monetary uncertainty. The recent pullback despite strong global gold ETF inflows reminds me that short-term price action and longer-term investment demand don’t always move together. Rather than chasing every rally or reacting to every correction, I prefer maintaining a measured allocation while watching how these macro forces develop.

Takeaway: Gold’s appeal may increasingly extend beyond inflation protection or falling interest rates. When confidence in traditional safe-haven assets begins to weaken, an asset with no issuer and no sovereign credit risk becomes particularly interesting. Sometimes what gold doesn’t depend on is precisely what makes it valuable.
