The Bank of Japan's Tankan survey indicates intensified labor shortages, particularly in smaller firms, contributing to a continuous year-on-year employment growth.

- On January 30, 2026, Japan's Cabinet Office will release December employment data showing an expected stable unemployment rate of 2.6% for the fifth consecutive month.  
- This rate remains consistent with the previous four months, below the five-year low of 2.3%, and indicates continuing wage growth due to significant labor shortages, marking the 41st consecutive year of year-over-year increases.  
- The Bank of Japan's Tankan survey supports this outlook, revealing a worsening labor shortage across various sectors, particularly among small businesses, with an increase in employment by 480,000 to 68.62 million despite a rise in unemployment figures.
