It has increased in 14 of the last 18 months and is currently up 0.11% today. The index is 32.50% below its record close from October 2007 and 1.68% off its 52-week high from March 2026. Year-to-date, it has gained 3.61%.

Moody's flags resilience in China economy, moves outlook to 'stable'

In 1Q26, China's industrial enterprises above designated size reported total profits of nearly RMB1.7 trillion, a 15.5% YoY increase. March profits rose 15.8% YoY. State-controlled enterprises earned RMB619.61 billion (up 10.1%), while joint-stock firms made RMB1.31 trillion (up 20.9%). Private enterprises saw a 25.4% profit increase to RMB430.53 billion. The mining sector's profits rose 16.2%, and manufacturing profits increased 19.1%. Operating revenue reached RMB33.19 trillion, up 5% YoY, with a profit margin of 5.11%. Accounts receivable rose 6.7% to RMB27.03 trillion.

- In the first quarter of 2026, total profits of China's large industrial enterprises reached nearly RMB 1.7 trillion, a year-on-year increase of 15.5%.  
- Profits varied by enterprise type, with private enterprises seeing the highest growth at 25.4%, while profits in the electricity and gas sectors decreased by 3.2%.  
- Total operating income for these enterprises was RMB 33.19 trillion, an increase of 5%, and the accounts receivable and finished goods inventory also showed significant year-on-year growth.

Fiscal revenue increased by 3.4%, resulting in a deficit of over 1.5 trillion yuan. The economy showed unexpected growth in Q1, reducing the need for additional fiscal stimulus. Policymakers are cautious due to rising debt and lower government income, especially after setting a modest growth target of 4.5-5% for the year. The ongoing conflict in Iran may complicate future stimulus plans, particularly with rising oil prices affecting foreign demand for exports.
