Iggy’s Journal: The STI Fell 1.36% on Monday, a Bigger Drop Than the Previous Five Sessions Combined
Tue 3 Nov 2026 | Morning
The Numbers
The STI closed on Monday 2 November at 5,303.83, down 72.91 points or 1.36%. On Wall Street, the Dow rose 213.67 points or 0.41% to 51,983.98, the S&P 500 fell 38.67 or 0.51% to 7,541.40, and the Nasdaq fell 272.68 or 1.07% to 25,164.32. The Associated Press tied the split to continued selling of AI and technology shares, while a 7.6% fall in crude oil lifted most other stocks. January Brent futures settled at US$104.77, down US$8.66 or 7.63% (ICE Futures via Xinhua and The Star). A Business Times headline says the STI’s total returns slid 5.2% in October. MAS has set aside S$30 million for a grant to help insurers build infrastructure investment teams, and opened a consultation until 18 December on lower capital charges for qualifying infrastructure assets.
My Personal Take
The size of the move is what I notice first. Monday’s 1.36% fall is larger than the whole of the previous five sessions, which took the index from 5,422.16 on 23 October to 5,376.74 on Friday, a fall of about 0.84%. The Business Times headline on October’s 5.2% fall in total returns shows the day came after a weak month. I will watch what SGX does at 9am and whether Monday stays a one-day event.
