$VG S&P 500(VOO.US)
The Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (VOO) is showing intense micro-level consolidation today, hovering right around the $678 zone as it tests key short-term moving averages. The price action reflects a classic waiting game among institutional desks, balancing a weaker tech tape against strong defensive sectors.
For long-term portfolios, this localized price stabilization serves as an excellent case study in market resilience. Instead of trying to pick the exact moment the consolidation ends, executing routine dollar-cost averaging (DCA) at these steady $679 levels continues to build a highly optimized, fee-efficient position across the broader economy.

🦎 IGGY MORNING BRIEF, 29 JULY 2026
☕ Good morning, Iguanas. SGX opens at 9 AM SGT. Here is what I am watching before the bell.
OVERNIGHT US SUMMARY
Wall Street closed mixed Tuesday. Dow up 1.03% to 52,747.32 and S&P 500 up 0.21% to 7,428.78 on strong Coca-Cola and Boeing earnings, Nasdaq down 0.22% to 24,876.91 as the semiconductor rotation kept running, Micron down 8.8% and AMD down 8.1%. VIX rose 8.25% to 18.24, real caution even with two of three indices higher. That chip weakness is the direct overnight line into UMS and CSE Global here.
SGX PRE-OPEN PULSE
STI last close, 28 July, 5,616.1, down 0.07%. MAS reported a S$20 billion annual profit this morning, investment gains offsetting a hefty currency translation hit from SGD strength, a reminder of how firm the local dollar has run. Brent fell again overnight, though sources disagree materially on the settlement level, treat it as lower and volatile rather than a specific number this morning.
THREE STOCKS ON IGGY'S RADAR
👁 558 UMS, closed down 8.47% yesterday
Overnight Micron and AMD losses confirm this is a sector rotation still running, not a one session scare that should fade at the open. Worth watching whether today extends the slide or the selling finally exhausts itself.
👁 Z74 SingTel, closed up 2.49% yesterday
Still the heaviest volume name on my radar most sessions. The core read has not moved, headline yield leans on a distribution piece funded by asset sales rather than the operating business, strength in the stock does not close that gap.
IGGY'S GAME PLAN
Watching whether the chip rotation extends into Singapore's semiconductor equipment names or starts to stabilise today. MAS's own currency hit is a reminder that a strong SGD cuts both ways, good for imported costs, a headwind for anything priced or earned offshore. Kopi money still buys the same cup either way, that discipline does not change with one index print.
$VG S&P 500(VOO.US)
The Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (VOO) is experiencing a fascinating internal tug-of-war today, navigating narrow ranges as the broader index absorbs two fiercely conflicting macro forces. On one side, a steep global sell-off in semiconductor giants, sparked by growing pressure on tech leaders to immediately justify their massive artificial intelligence infrastructure spending, is creating heavy downside drag on the fund’s market-cap-weighted tech sleeve. Conversely, crude oil prices have dropped significantly following a pause in geopolitical tensions, easing immediate energy-cost pressures and providing a strong buffer for the rest of the market. Consequently, while VOO remains relatively flat due to its top-heavy tech allocation, a clear majority of individual stocks across value and cyclical sectors are actually trading higher today.
Will seek opportunities to bring down cost!!

Though Nvidia lowers and there is tension between US and China over AI due to lack of factual and legal basis, S&P and Dow shares increases and Apple becomes the most valuable company again. This feels like companies’ battle to survive and live.

MAS policy tightening strengthens the SGD and keeps interest rates elevated—benefiting Singapore banks via resilient interest margins and wealth inflows, while headwinding S-REITs through higher refinancing costs.

Local banks continue to push past resistance to pursue new highs as STI strengthens. A surprising underdog as our local market is currently outperforming the S&P500 by a whopping 10%, considering that many, even locals, think that the STI is a boring and dead market. Of course, a large portion of this success must be credited to the big 3 banks, who carried most of the index for the large part of the year. What I want to see is how long can this strength continue, and even when it does retrace, how big will the pullback be.

Iran announced that they are not "at a full scale war with US". Markets recovered slightly following the news as oil tumbles back between $90 and $100. I wouldn't take anything for granted, especially when we are in the midst of earnings season, where volatility is completely expected and normal. With more big cap companies reporting this week and the past trend of Capex dragging down share prices, I won't be surprised to see more dips coming.

Brent crude oil is falling significantly back to around $90, following a pause in strikes by the US and Iran over the weekend, although negotiations are ongoing rather than an official ceasefire; it closed at $96.28 on Friday after trading above $100 for several weeks.
The 顺势 (following the trend) decline in oil prices is a positive development for energy-importing Singapore.
Global energy costs in June impacted consumer prices, leading to high core inflation in Singapore. Consequently, the Monetary Authority of Singapore has tightened monetary policy, creating a chain reaction.

$VG S&P 500(VOO.US)
Excluding this specific anomalous outlier, the true, fundamental blended earnings growth across the rest of the S&P 500 drops back down to a more normalized 25.9%. This reveals that VOO’s immediate valuation backdrop is actually far more grounded and less overheated than headline data suggests, while its forward P/E ratio sits at a reasonable 20.1. For disciplined wealth building, buying into these consolidation levels provides highly stable exposure to solid underlying corporate fundamentals, stripping out misleading headline noise.
Closing to my cost, will find opportunities to cut down costs more!

$VG S&P 500(VOO.US)
While recent earnings seasons have put heavy capital expenditure pressures on mega-cap AI tech, the fundamental beauty of VOO lies in its capitalization-weighted flexibility. As growth multiples face immediate scrutiny, the index benefits from a broadening market breadth, with cyclical sectors, financial services, and industrials stepping up to absorb the tech sector’s volatility shifts. For disciplined portfolios, accumulating shares during these consolidation phases acts as a highly rational long-term strategy, locking in lower cost-basis positioning across the bedrock of the US economy.
Stay disciplined and continue look out for opportunities while maintaining recurring investments!

$VG S&P 500(VOO.US)
The Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (VOO) retraced toward $678.61 as broader equity benchmarks absorb a notable post-earnings pullback. The index is experiencing amplified tactical pressure driven by mega-cap tech earnings misses, high capital expenditure guidance, and intense sector rotation out of high-valuation growth components.
With crucial macro indicators and the upcoming FOMC decision looming, market uncertainty has triggered a sharp spike in fear metrics, pushing the CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) to an intra-day peak of 19+.
Noting that the VIX reached 19+, I actively capitalized on this volatility spike to accumulate more VOO shares, effectively utilizing the dip to lower my average cost-basis. Maintaining a disciplined dollar-cost averaging approach during these broad-market corrections strips emotion out of the equation and maximizes long-term compounding potential.
